It's a while until 2045, but the wait might be well worth it. The covering implies a significant change in how we navigate Central Nacka, largely for the better.
At the moment, there is no trace of an overhead structure over the highway; it's simply a highway at present. There are two bridges that cross over the highway and two bus stops on each side. There are three roundabouts that can be used to estimate the area of the overhead structure. The images show how the area looks today. The estimated area of the overhead structure is approximately 50,000 m².
In Central Nacka, an important hub for sustainable travel within and between Nacka, Värmdö, and Stockholm is being created. A new integrated bus terminal is planned in direct connection to the Nacka subway station, forming an attractive public transportation node for transferring between buses and the subway. To make this possible, road 222 (Värmdöleden) will be relocated northward. The project is scheduled to commence in 2030 and be completed around 2045.
The Värmdöleden has long been one of Stockholm's busiest roads. With a growing population, we in Nacka have seen a steady influx of people and thus traffic outward. In order to improve traffic safety and the urban environment, the idea of covering a part of the Värmdöleden near Nacka Forum has long been a relevant topic.
A roughly 300-meter-long covering of the Värmdöleden and the accompanying bus terminal connect the northern and southern parts of Central Nacka. This creates a cohesive urban environment with greener, safer, and more vibrant neighborhoods. With more job opportunities, services, meeting places, and proximity to green spaces, it becomes more attractive to live and work in the area.
The covering would enable a more accessible and connected area. Instead of a highway that cuts off all mobility, an open space with greenery, parks, and new residences is created.
The covering would also reduce noise levels and improve air quality in the area. By covering the road, a significant portion of the noise is dampened, and people are separated from the poor air quality caused by car exhaust fumes.
Of course, covering the Värmdöleden near Nacka Forum would not have been a simple task. Financing is one of the major issues. Despite this and other significant challenges, the potential for such a project is immense, and it will be exciting to see the project gain momentum in the future.
